Shedding Season is upon us…

Shedding season is upon us… so why do we need to groom our dogs?

There are a number of reasons your dog should regularly visit a dog groomer. Groomers are fully
trained and properly equipped with all the right tools, they will be able to offer guidance to help you
with an upkeep of your dog’s hygiene in between visits.

Many dogs don’t like getting their nails clipped, a dog that hasn’t been groomed in some time may require extra attention that a dog groomer is well suited to give, and there is never enough time in the day– let the dog groomer do the hard work for you!

With regular visits to the dog groomer, you won’t be overwhelmed by all the long dog hair all over your stuff and your dog won’t be embarrassed by a bad haircut. How often should you groom your dog? The Kennel Club recommends that we send our dogs to the groomers once a month. Although, many groomers recommend your dog be groomed every six to eight weeks.

If you have a young dog it also recommended that, on top of a monthly visit to the dog groomer, you
should desensitize your young dogs by brushing them at home in between visits. Some dogs require
daily grooming at home, puppies should be brushed daily to get them used to it but in addition it’s a
fantastic way to bond with your new friend. Even older dogs benefit by brushings in between visits to
the groomer—un-brushed dog hair can lead to your dog developing painful mats

Another service your groomer or vets nurse will handle for your dog is trimming their nails, these
require regular attention – typically every few weeks. If your dog’s nails are not trimmed frequently enough they will grow too long and pose a threat of causing pain or bleeding during trimmings.

Finally, there is another service that most people don’t want to do by themselves: gland expression.  Impacted anal glands need to be relieved, you can have your vet or groomer teach you how to do it, but it is a very smelly process and is probably best left to the professionals. You should probably let the dog groomers do that for you.

In short, brush your dog often, be sure your dog’s nails are frequently trimmed and visit the dog
groomer about once a month.

These simple guidelines can help to keep you and your dog happy!

Don’t forget to use your King Komb in-between visits
